Hey there, mamas and strong women navigating pelvic floor challenges—I see you. Whether you're freshly postpartum or you've been quietly dealing with symptoms for years, you're not alone, and you're definitely not "broken." One condition that often flies under the radar (but really shouldn't) is pelvic organ prolapse. Let’s talk about what it is, how to recognize it, and—most importantly—what you can do about it.
What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) happens when one or more of the pelvic organs—like the bladder, uterus, or rectum—shift from their usual position and press into the vaginal wall. This happens when the pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues become weakened or stretched, often due to:
-
Pregnancy and childbirth
-
Chronic constipation or straining
-
Persistent coughing
-
Heavy lifting
-
Hormonal changes during menopause
-
High-impact exercise over time
Common Symptoms
Some people with prolapse don’t feel anything at all—but many do. Here are a few signs that might sound familiar:
-
A feeling of heaviness or pressure in your pelvis
-
Sensation of “something falling out” or a bulge in the vaginal area
-
Trouble inserting tampons or feeling like they "fall out"
-
Urinary leakage or frequent urges to go
-
Constipation or difficulty emptying the bowels
-
Discomfort during sex
If you’re reading this and nodding along—please know this is common, but not something you have to just live with.
How Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Can Help
Here’s the good news: pelvic floor PT is a first-line, evidence-based treatment for prolapse. Surgery isn’t your only option, and for many women, it’s not necessary at all.
In pelvic floor physical therapy, we’ll work together to:
Strengthen (or relax) your pelvic floor muscles
We’ll do more than just Kegels (and no, not everyone should be doing Kegels!). We'll tailor a program based on your body’s unique needs—whether that's building strength, improving coordination, or releasing tension.
Support your body with better movement and posture
How you lift your baby, how you breathe during a workout, even how you poop—all of these can impact your pelvic floor. We’ll address the way your whole body moves to reduce pressure and support healing.
Educate and empower you
My goal isn’t just to treat symptoms—it’s to give you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to feel at home in your body again. We’ll talk about lifestyle strategies, exercises, and realistic expectations for recovery.
You Deserve to Feel Good in Your Body
If you’ve been feeling “off” down there, worried something isn’t quite right, or just want to make sure your postpartum recovery is truly complete—let’s talk.
Free 15-Minute Consults Available – Sometimes the first step is the hardest. If you're not sure if pelvic floor PT is right for you, let’s chat and figure it out together.
